Espen Myklebust Olsen is a trained church musician, organist, and conductor who studied at the music conservatories in Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm. He works as a church musician and conductor at S:t Matteus Parish in Stockholm, leading S:t Matteus Symphony Orchestra and S:t Matteus Chamber Choir. In addition to his regular duties, he freelances as a concert organist, accompanist, conductor, and educator.
As a conductor, Espen has always had a deep interest in oratorios and has several in his repertoire. In addition to working with amateur choirs and orchestras, he has collaborated with professional ensembles such as the Swedish Radio Choir, Vokal Nord, Drottningholm Baroque Ensemble, Stockholm Bach Society, Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra, and Trondheim Soloists. He also leads his own paid ensemble, Ensemble NEO, focusing on music from the Gregorian repertoire, Middle Ages, and Renaissance. In his role as a parish musician, Espen has led several notable projects, including the first recording of Ivar Widéen's Requiem, a premiere of Ylva Q Arkvik's "Christmas Oratorio – the shepherds' and people's story" in collaboration with Gustaf Vasa Parish, and a focus on classical music for children, resulting in performances with music from Bach's Christmas Oratorio before Christmas and music from Bach's St. John Passion at the beginning of Holy Week.
As a concert organist, Espen regularly performs within and outside S:t Matteus Parish, with a repertoire spanning from the Middle Ages to contemporary works. He has performed in several churches in Scandinavia, including cathedrals in Bodø, Tønsberg, Oslo, and Västerås, German Church in Stockholm, and St. Mary's Church in Helsingør. He has also been a soloist with professional orchestras and has appeared at various international music festivals such as the Oslo International Church Music Festival and Stockholm Early Music Festival. Espen has a particular interest in historical organs and also plays harpsichord and continuo.
For his musical accomplishments, Espen has won several prizes and scholarships, including the Fridthjov Anderssen Organ Competition for Youth, Amager Talent Prize, Jansons Grant, and Royal Swedish Academy of Music's national scholarship.
